Current gadgets and web tools testing

Just to update what I’m currently using and testing at the moment.

  • Garmin Forerunner 50 watch. Am getting to grips with watch and loving it and am just getting into using the heart rate monitor. Will keep you posted on that.
  • Flickr – continuing to use Flickr for my visual food diary and have got into the habit of automatically photographing my meals on my camera phone.
  • Twitter – tweeting about my runs and the occasional word of running wisdom.
  • Fetch Everyone – another web tool for logging training, planning runs, connecting with other runners, More info on this to come.
  • Dailymile – have just started to use www.dailymile.com for recording my training (similar to Gyminee) and will blog a bit more about that in the next day or so.

Confessions of a failed food diarist

The observant among you will note a big gap in my flickr food diary strangely enough around the time of Christmas and New Year. I have no shame but really there are only so many pictures of food (especially of the less than healthy variety) that one can upload to the web.

I think my food “tag cloud” would have looked a bit different from the one below featuring largely PIZZA, CHOCOLATE, FERRERO ROCHER, MINI TOBERLONE (REALLY YUMMY!), OKAY MORE CHOCOLATE OF VARIOUS SHAPES AND BRANDS, CAKE, DESSERTS, PARTY FOOD, MORE PARTY FOOD, NUTS, CRISPS … OH AND OF COURSE DRINK.

hangs head in shame …okay.. go on… you can give me a row now – the bathroom scales already have. But it’s back on the wagon now – and normal service will resume on the flickr food diary!

Food diary tag cloud

I’ve been keeping a visual food diary on Fickr for the past while – (you can link to it from the right hand menu pics). You never know – it might yet make it into the Tate Modern as art! The idea was to look at the variety of food I was eating, colour of fruit and vegetables, portion size etc rather than being obsessed with calories. It did make me more aware of the presentation of my food.

Anyway I have also been tagging all the pictures and it’s interesting to have a look at the tag cloud which gives a good idea of the foods I eat most regularly (cheese seems to feature big). (I used the “fairtrade” tag if any item in that meal had the fairtrade mark).

A food diary (with a difference)!

I’m finding it really useful to use Twitter to plan and update on my running. It’s keeping me motivated to go running after work when previously I might have changed my mind. I thought about using it to keep a kind of ongoing food diary, and it would work great for this if you want to try it, but I’ve decided to do something a bit different.

I’m going to use Flickr (an online photosharing website) to keep a visual food diary so basically I use my phone to photo everything I eat, upload it to Flickr, tag it and..voila…a visual food diary.   Read More…
