I did some mental toughness training yesterday - I had my annual trip to the dentist.
Even typing the word “dentist” makes my palms sweat! I would rather run a marathon (and believe me I know how painful those last few miles are..) At least I’m in control there – when you’re pinned in a chair with a metal clamp stuck in your mouth and someone trying to carrry on a conversation with you while inflicting all manner of pain on your mouth, mile 26 seems like a doddle.
It’s good I suppose to have to do things we don’t like and can’t control (but not too often). It’s good to face fears head on no matter what they are. Different things hold different fears and challenges for different people – toughing it out is what is important.
PS there’s a difference between toughing it out and actually coming to enjoy it. I can guarantee I will never, ever enjoy the dentist!
